CyberGhost VPN has been working on its weaknesses over the last years, and it’s become a much more consistent VPN service ever since. While these are good news about the service, there were also some tricky changes on the corporate side.
The service stands by a strict no-logs policy, good enough privacy features, and operates in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction. All that put together would be a good reason to position CyberGhost’s privacy standards close to the best-case scenario. But there’s also a huge caveat, though.
CyberGhost comes packed with valuable features. Some of them are hard to find and lack in many of its competitors, such as split tunneling. Others are mandatory but only sometimes well-deployed in some VPNs, like an automatic kill switch.
On the other hand, some essential features are missing for a company whose “reason for being” is to protect its users’ privacy and expand freedom. CyberGhost could add multihop and Tor over VPN capabilities, both features currently offered by Proton VPN and NordVPN, for instance.

The company was a software platform and provided infrastructure for other technological endeavors.
Regarding the malware problem, it’s a reasonable defense argument. Even gigantic social media companies struggle to prevent criminal activity over their networks.
On the other hand, Crossrider also has a private data selling issue on its record. That was, in fact, a business practice. It’s sadly more common than it should be in the tech industry. But I’m particularly concerned about it as we’re discussing a company focused on privacy contradictorily.
Since the acquisition, a much different company has controlled the VPN provider. Besides the company history, we also have to consider a possible jurisdiction risk that comes with the change of ownership.
Although CyberGhost has its headquarters in Romania, its parent company is based in the United Kingdom, a member of the Five-Eyes surveillance alliance.
With CyberGhost under the new command and the influence of a not-so-friendly jurisdiction for privacy, only the future will tell if my concern is justified or exaggerated.
